Muriel Enjalran

Enjalran is exploring the artist’s relationship to public property, and more specifically examining how these practices in the city force us to rethink aesthetics. She regularly collaborates with the artists Ângela Ferreira, Caetano Dias and Hamish Fulton, with whom she was invited as curator to present an important monographic project at Crac Languedoc Roussillon in Sète, France. In addition, Enjalran is developing a collaborative network that brings together artists from Portugal, Brazil and Morocco, where she also regularly curates projects for L’appartement 22, an independent art space in Rabat. At the Jackman Goldwasser residency program / Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago, she is currently pursuing her explorations on the renewal of artistic forms of engagement in the public sphere. She has been recently appointed as the new director of the CRP/Centre régional de la Photography Nord-Pas-de-Calais in Douchy-les-Mines, which develops art centre missions in the field of photography and contemporary images. Founded in 1982, it grew out of a collective of photographers who came from the photo club of the Usinor Denain Work Council. It houses a collection of over 15,000 works with an art library, and also has a document archive. It develops activities supporting creativity, production, research (unique in the field of photography in France), distribution and mediation, implementing these in a region that is marked by an industrial past and has a long history of commitment to culture. Enjalran has worked at the d.c.a – the French association for the development of centres d’art (2006-2015) – serving as Project Manager, she helped to coordinate a structure of 50 art spaces across France, and enable connections between those spaces and other European institutions. She was an Associate Curator for the first edition of the Biennale de Belleville, Paris, in 2011; and for the 3rd Arts in Marrakech International Biennale, in 2009.

Between the Politicization of Art and the Aesthetics of Politics

We speak today of a potent return to the politics within art, but what do we mean in saying this? Does “making political art” imply a direct engagement of the artist within the public sphere with a work? Muriel Enjalran addresses these questions in her Journal.
