Stationary

Based in Hong Kong Active since 2013 Stationary is a collection of stories published annually and disseminated by word of mouth. Loosely forged as a recess from one’s productive practice, we invite artists, curators, and writers to take stock of and elaborate on their obsessions, fascinations and influences that otherwise could not find form or expression within their own creative practices in the suspended moment offered by this publication. In employing a distribution system with an intimate approach to disseminating content, the project relies solely on personal recommendations via word of mouth or e-mail that occur between readers. Moving from one person to the next, our hope is that this way of circulating stories allows for a circle of readers to form slowly, specifically and generously over the years. Stationary began as a conversation with Spring Workshop founder Mimi Brown in 2013, and the first printed issue edited by Heman Chong and Christina Li was launched in February 2015. Stationary 2 was edited by Cairo-based artist and writer Malak Helmy and Spring curator-at-large Christina Li. The digital version was circulated as electronic missives each with a photo from a new series by photographer Ann Woo, from January to March 2017. This is a prelude of the volume of texts that invite readers to burrow into fantasies and venture down wormholes, finding reprieve from collective exhaustion. The publication series is published by Spring, Hong Kong and is designed by Julie Peeters, with Janine Armin as Associate Editor.
