Film Screenings @ TEMP

Gerda Paliušyt?, Evening with Doctor Sheppard, 2012, 40 min. An evening of screenings Organized by Inesa Pavlovskaite and Helen Homan Wu Tuesday, December 11, 2012 6pm ICI Curatorial Hub @ TEMP 57 Walker Street New York, NY 10013 In conjunction with the presentations of Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius and Videotage, Hong Kong at the ICI Curatorial Hub @ TEMP, two films making their New York debuts will be screened. Gerda Paliušyt? Evening with Doctor Sheppard, 2012 40 min. Evening with Doctor Sheppard is a documentation of a guided tour in Vilnius Picture Gallery, created as a part of Lithuanian Art 2012 exhibition at the Contemporary Art Centre (Vilnius, Lithuania). For one evening, works of contemporary artists Gediminas G. Akstinas, Liudvikas Buklys, Chris Fitzpatrick, Laura Kaminskait? and Elena Narbutait? were included in the permanent exhibition of Lithuanian art from Renaissance to Romanticism. The tour guide, followed by the cinematographer, tells the usual story of the exhibition for a group of visitors. Although they were invited to a contemporary art exhibition, none of them know what these artworks look like and where to find them. The film’s title refers to “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd,” a book by Agatha Christie. The novel is famous for its never-before-seen plot twist: Hercule Poirot’s assistant Doctor Sheppard, who narrates the story, is in fact the murderer. In Evening with Doctor Sheppard, the intruding artworks or changes in the permanent exhibition, made by director Gerda Paliušyt? herself, are not revealed until the end of the film, so the gallery’s interior, facts told by the guide, and people taking the tour seem suspicious and unnatural. The film explores the power of gaze and imagination, and comments on the idea of a museum as an institution that opposes the plurality of gazes. The coherent story told by the guide is interrupted by dynamic camera movements, creating a dissonance between words and images – a gap where contemporary artworks emerge. Artist and curator Gerda Paliušyt? was born in 1987 in Vilnius, Lithuania. She received her Bachelor‘s degree in Art History at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and is now studying for a Master’s degree in the Practice and Spread of Contemporary Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. She has co-curated exhibition Grey Matter (Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 2009) and a Jason Dodge exhibition (Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania, 2011). In 2012, she established an exhibition space together with Inesa Pavlovskait? for contemporary art in the Vilnius Planetarium. Since 2011, Paliušyt? has participated in artistic activities, together with artists Gediminas G. Akstinas and Jurgis Paškevi?ius, and organized events-performances based on screenplays written for a specific site and time: Exhibition Closure (Parodos uždarymas, 2011), Intermission (2011), Scenario for Swimming Pool (Scenarijus baseinui, 2012). Evening with Doctor Sheppard is Gerda Paliušyt?’s first film. It premiered at the Contemporary Art Centre (Vilnius) in August 2012. x Chun Yip Lo, Days After N Coming, 2012, 1 hour, 40 min. Chun Yip Lo Days After N Coming, 2012 1 hour, 40 min. (starting at 7pm) “In the year 2010, I started participating in demonstrations and kept thinking how can I get involved more. What I got was my camera and my sense of the power of cinema. I might not be able to give an inspiring speech or to overpower others physically but my creativity and recording techniques could make a difference. I began filming the anger in Hong Kong and also my growth over these past two years. This led to the creation of Days After N Coming. Starting from the New Year’s march, protests during the year 2010 could be seen taking place all over Hong Kong, as protestors cried out their disagreement against the construction of the High-Speed Express Rail Link, the demolishment of Choi Yuen Village, the 2011-12 Budget, and in support for the international Occupy Movement. Participants came together even when there was no longer a specific leading figure, and were dedicated to learn how to fight against injustice.” – Chun Yip Lo, Director Chun Yip Lo studied film at the Hong Kong City University, School of Creative Media. From 2010 onwards he has produced several short films: deep in mind, 21 years after, Paradox and the latest one, his first feature film, Days After N Coming, which all set off from a historical perspective with regard to changes in society. In various demonstrations and mass campaigns, Lo has participated not only as filmmaker, but also as one of the many participants. On the streets, in rallies that are rigorous and yet romantic, he gets the chance to meet more people with the same interests. Each campaign uses different methods to raise social imagination, to gather more voices, to enhance thinking and to outrun the dominance of giant monopoly. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP to rsvp@curatorsintl.org with TEMP Screenings in the subject field. Refreshments will be served.
