Tuesday, June 5, 2018 6:30–8pm ICI Curatorial Hub 401 Broadway, Suite 1620 FREE and open to the public Curator Raphael Fonseca will speak about an archive that he has sourced of over nine hundred images of hammocks that suggest contrasting ideas of “Brazilianness.” He will present on the relations between the iconography of the hammock and different concepts of Brazilian identity, including laziness and tropical visual culture, the traditions of participatory art in Brazil, and the association between the object and native culture. He has organized his selection into case studies in a temporal arch between the 16th century and contemporary art and visual culture. Fonseca will present two exhibitions that came about as a result of his archival research Quando o tempo aperta (When the time presses), Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, 2016, and Dorminhocos (Sleepers), Rio de Janeiro, 2018.
