Program Dates: March 7–12, 2013

Application Deadline: Passed Developed by Independent Curators International (ICI) in collaboration with the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, the Curatorial Intensive: Contemporary Curatorial Practice will examine the pragmatics of organizing exhibitions, while addressing the specificities of curating in the African context. This week-long course will focus on exhibition development—from building working relationships with artists to the theoretical aspects of understanding how to turn a concept into a project—and explore key curatorial strategies for working in a range of exhibition spaces. Recognizing that there are few opportunities for emerging professionals to receive practical training and guidance, and reflecting the potential for building a Pan-African curatorial network, the Curatorial Intensive is targeted toward self-motivated individuals—working independently or in institutions in Africa—who would benefit from a week of intensive conversations around the issues and questions that regularly arise for curators. With an international roster of speakers, Contemporary Curatorial Practice will consider experimental approaches to exhibition-making and other curatorial forms, as well as new ways of working within institutions. Seminars, site visits, individual meetings, and roundtable discussions will be led by ICI staff in collaboration with the following faculty: Zdenka Badovinac (Director of Moderna Galerija/Museum of Modern Art, Ljubliana), Koyo Kouoh (Artistic Director of RAW MATERIAL COMPANY, Dakar), Michelle Marxuach (Co-director and Co-founder of Beta-Local, San Juan, Puerto Rico), Riason Naidoo (Director of South African National Gallery, Cape Town), Gabi Ngcobo (Creative Director of the Center for Historical Reenactments, Johannesburg), Nontobeko Ntombela (Johannesburg-based curator), and Didier Schaub (Co-founder of Doual’art, Douala), among others. Application Guidelines Applicants currently working in Africa will be eligible to participate in the Curatorial Intensive. To apply send a single PDF to misa@curatorsintl.org with JOHANNESBURG on the subject line. All applications must include a 300-word description of a project that the candidate would like to develop during the workshop. This description should outline the proposal concept and any artists that the applicant is considering. Also required are a current 250-word bio and a 500-word letter of intent, outlining how the applicant sees the workshop impacting on their curatorial career. Additionally, the applicant should submit a 300-word description of a recent exhibition or curatorial project that impressed them. Fees and Scholarships The program fee is SAR10,000. Additionally participants are responsible for covering travel and accommodation expenses. The majority of participants will be eligible to receive generous scholarship packages that subsidize or eliminate the program fees, accommodation, and travel expenses. These bursaries are made possible with the support of Arts Collaboratory through the Triangle Network, Africalia, Everard Read Gallery, and Sam Nhlengethwa. Scholarships are awarded on basis of need and merit. If you would like to apply for a scholarship please include a letter of motivation with your application. About the Curatorial Intensive The Curatorial Intensive is ICI’s short-term, low-cost training program that offers 12-14 curators the chance to develop project ideas and make connections with professionals in the field. It also provides the invaluable opportunity for peer-group education, forging new networks internationally. The Curatorial Intensive takes place twice annually in New York, and in other locations in conjunction with institutional partners worldwide. To date there have been 11 Curatorial Intensives including one in Brazil and China, and two each in Mumbai and Philadelphia. Since 2010, ICI has received 768 applications from curators in 63 countries. In two years 165 curators have participated in the programs from 39 countries and 19 U.S. states. About the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios The Bag Factory, more formally known as the Fordsburg Artists’ Studios, is a non-profit organization established in Johannesburg in 1991 to initially provide studio space for South African visual artists. Under apartheid South Africa endured numerous cultural setbacks due to restrictive governmental policies, educational deficits and the international cultural boycott imposed against the country. As a result, generations of South Africans were cut off from the international art scene. The Bag Factory works to promote and develop the visual arts through its provision of subsidized studio space, professional skills development programs and its visiting artists residency program. In 2013 the Bag Factory is working to deal with the distinct lack of curatorial experience within the Country. The Bag Factory is a member of the Triangle Network.
