Putting the Art in Party
There Was a Bar in the Elevator at the Independent Curators International Benefit

Art folks really know how to party.

How do we know this to be true? Because there was a bar in the elevator on the way up to the Independent Curators International benefit on Tuesday night.Yes, this is a larger-than-normal freight elevator at Center548 that could fit a small gathering of its own. But inside, a bartender was mixing a drink called the Firecracker, made with vodka, sparkling water and jalapeño.

“Am I the only one brave enough to drink this?” one eager patron asked, grabbing a ready-made cocktail as the elevator inched its way up to the second floor. (Yes, you could have taken the stairs a flight, but did the stairs have a bar?) “Actually,” she said, taking a sip, “it’s a little spicy.”

“It’s not that,” responded the arts patron and investment banker Greg Miller, of Greenhill & Co. “It’s the ice that’s the issue.”

Like New York’s weather this week, the art scene has been all over the place, both in terms of general taste and location. Over the weekend, many of the ICI’s guests had ventured to Mexico City for the opening of Eugenio Lopez’s Museo Jumex. The general consensus was it was a very fun weekend with a very fun series of parties.
