Ulrike Ottinger

Ulrike Ottinger (b. 1942, Germany) is a multimedia artist and documentary filmmaker who has worked extensively in Europe and East Asia. She trained as an academic and artist in Paris in the 1960s. Her work has been shown internationally at film festivals, including the Berlinale (1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2004, 2007), the International Women’s Film Festival (2008, 2009), and the Cannes Film Festival (1981, 1989). It has also appeared at such major museums as Deichtorhallen Hamburg (2016), Tate Modern, London (2004, 2006, 2010), and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2007), and on stage at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele (2006), the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Germany (2001), and the Berliner Ensemble (2001). Her feature films include Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia (1989), for which she won the Deutches Filmpreis for visual design, China: The Arts—The People (1986), and Prater (2008). The latter two both won the German Film Critics’ Award.
