Curatorial Intensive Auckland 2019

Program dates: July 29 - August 4, 2019

In collaboration with Artspace Aotearoa, ICI presents the first Curatorial Intensive in T?maki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. This Intensive draws upon the diverse cultural environment from Auckland and the greater te Moana Nui-a-Kiwa Pacific Ocean region. <b>Program Dates: July 10–18, 2011 Application Deadline: March 18, 2011</b> Recognizing the need to support curatorial talent and provide low-cost practical training in the current economic climate, Independent Curators International (ICI) initiated the Curatorial Intensive — the first major short-course training program for emerging curators in the United States. Implemented in 2010, the Curatorial Intensive brings selected curators from around the world to New York for a 10-day, concentrated schedule of seminars, tutorials and meetings with ICI core faculty and guest lecturers consisting of leading artists, curators, critics, directors, and academics.

What Is Curating?

December 16, 2010.</small> What is the role of the curator? What do curators do, and how do they engage with artists, space, institutions, and audiences? What kinds of research into artists and their work do curators conduct? What are the concepts and models that they use in the making of exhibitions? This program, co-produced with the Mohile Parikh Center in Mumbai, examined an evolving definition of contemporary curatorial practice, shaped by institutional professionals, independent curators, and artists. Different curatorial models including solo and group exhibitions, film series, archives, and commissions will be considered and various contexts such as the museum, galleries or festivals were examined. With group discussion, the local curatorial context was also mapped and explored.

In October 2010 in New York ICI is organizing The Curatorial Intensive for emerging curators internationally who want to learn about curating in the public realm. From an open competition, 10–14 individuals will be selected to study with some of today’s leading practitioners working within the rapidly growing field known as public practice.

Summer 2010

Program dates: June 6-17, 2010

Building on its history as a hub for curatorial ideas, ICI is supporting a new generation of curators to develop exhibition proposals. The first iteration of The Curatorial Intensive took place in June 2010 in New York for emerging curators. From an open competition, 17 individuals were selected to come to New York and work with some of today’s leading curators and artists. Through a rigorous schedule of workshops, discussions and critiques, as well as site visits to local institutions and artist’s studios, each participant was led through the process of developing an idea for an exhibition into a full exhibition proposal.
