Curatorial Seminar in San Juan

 Curatorial Seminar in San Juan

Program Dates: October 12–15, 2016

The Curatorial Seminar in San Juan is targeted to a small group of alumni of the Curatorial Intensive program, who will gather to collectively discuss strategies of research and collaboration specific to the cultural condition in which each of them operates. The seminar will reflect on Edouard Glissant’s concept of marronage as point of reference to discuss ideas of cultural subversion, geographical proximity, and alternative forms of discourse. The program is a collaboration with Beta-Local, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting aesthetic thought and cultural practices, with a focus on the vitality of the Puerto Rican art community. It will be conducted entirely in Spanish and will take place from October 12–15, 2016. Participants include: Fernanda Albuquerque (Porto Alegre, Brazil), Alba Colomo (Nottingham, England), Ximena Gama (Bogotá, Colombia), Andrés Jurado (Bogotá, Colombia), Marina Reyes Franco (San Juan, Puerto Rico), and Arnaldo Rodríguez Bagué (San Juan, Puerto Rico). Facilitators include: María del Carmen Carrión (Director of Public Programs & Research, ICI), Mauricio Marcín (Curator, Museo Experimental El Eco), and Sofía Gallisá Muriente, Tony Cruz Pabón, and Pablo Guardiola of Beta-Local. About Beta Local Beta-Local is a non-profit organization based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, dedicated to supporting and promoting aesthetic thought and practice through various programs: -La Práctica is a research and production program that runs for 9 months for individuals with a background in art, design or cultural production. This program is designed particularly for those interested in generating new conditions, relations and positions from which to produce in and outside of established circuits. The mode of work is that of a critical and practical atelier in Puerto Rico, the Tropics, the Caribbean and in this time. -The Harbor is an international artist residency program. Every month we invite artists, curators, thinkers and other cultural agents living abroad to live and work in our space, work with participants of our programs and develop projects in Puerto Rico. -La Ivan Illich, an experimental pedagogical platform through which anyone can propose a class, workshop, conference, encounter, study group or any other knowledge exchange. Sometimes groups form that meet for months. Sometimes a workshop is taught in several sessions. Sometimes a single event is enough to trigger relations that continue beyond Beta-Local.
