Ariana Faye Allensworth: Staying Power & Anti-Eviction Mapping Project Wednesday, August 14, 2019 6:30-8pm ICI 401 Broadway, Suite 1620 New York, NY 10013 FREE and open to the public On August 14 join ICI for the second iteration of the two-part program entitled New Media Intimacies with Ariana Faye Allensworth (Curatorial Intensive Alumna NOLA ’19) to discuss how the Anti-eviction Mapping Project (AEMP) makes visible what gentrification obscures. Founded in 2013 during the dawn of the current tech boom in San Francisco, AEMP is a volunteer-run data visualization and storytelling collective documenting displacement and resistance upon gentrifying landscapes. Primarily working in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York City, the collective produces digital maps, oral history work, films, murals, and community events. ICI’s public programs highlights the work of our various collaborators across projects, exhibitions, and Curatorial Intensives in an effort to activate sites of knowledge production within a public space. New Media Intimacies looks specifically at the work being done by those collaborators who use technology and digital arts as a tool for connecting communities. Allensworth will share highlights and work in progress from Staying Power, a participatory photography project commissioned by The Laundromat Projects Create Change Residency that explores New York City public housing histories through the lens of longtime residents. Produced in collaboration with AEMP, the project employs photovoice — a research tool that uses photography as a form of inquiry — and oral history interviews to build community power. The program considers how data and imagery shape debates about affordable housing as well as what becomes possible when new media strategies are leveraged to trouble hierarchical assumptions about who is the expert. Allensworth will lead participants through an activity that puts photovoice into practice. Allensworth is a recent alumna of the 2019 New Orleans Curatorial Intensive. The Curatorial Intensive offers a group of curators the chance to develop project ideas and make connections with professionals in the field. It also provides the invaluable opportunity for peer-group education, forging new networks internationally. Please see here for more information about the first program in the New Media Intimacies series with Morehshin Allahyari. To attend, please RSVP to rsvp@curatorsintl.org with ARIANA in the subject line.

Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Image Caption: Screen grab of Alameda County from AEMP’s Narratives of Displacement and Resistance Map (detail).
