Blonde Art Books: Artist Conversation and Launch Tuesday, July 22, 2014 6:308pm ICI Curatorial Hub 401 Broadway, Suite 1620 FREE and open to the public Blonde Art Books founder Sonel Breslav, in conversation with artist Sara Cwynar and Corina Reynolds of Small Editions, will discuss their roles within independent publishing; Blonde Art Books first publication; and celebrate the launch of the special limited edition of Kitsch Encyclopedia, 2014. Kitsch Encyclopedia is a book project by Sara Cwynar of original and appropriated images and text, published by Blonde Art Books in 2014. Kitsch Encyclopedia is a book project that brings together writings by Milan Kundera, Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard, as well as my own writing to formulate a relationship of kitsch to images. Kundera considers kitsch to be a categorizing phenomenon: a means through which complex human experience is distilled to simple, sentimental motifs. All three writers discuss a similar circumstance of the contemporary image world: the way that our culture of images, especially in the age of the internet, provides an Idealized, kitsch-based image world that exists on top of the real world and in many ways has subsumed it. -Sara Cwynar About Blonde Art Books Established by Sonel Breslav in 2012, Blonde Art Books is a Brooklyn based organization dedicated to promoting self-published art books through exhibitions, publications, book fairs, talks, and online exposure. Kitsch Encyclopedia by Sara Cwynar is Blonde Art Books first publication. Blonde Art Books curates book-centric exhibitions that examine the connections between traditionally exhibited artwork and the books, magazines, and other printed matter that inform and shape their conception. An example of this model of presentation is the recent exhibition The Scenery changes three times at Schema Projects, Brooklyn, NY (March 2 March 31, 2013) and Render Visible at Present Company, Brooklyn, NY (September 30 October 28, 2012). In addition, Blonde Art Books participates in pop-up bookshop events that feature new independent art publications by contemporary artists and small presses. This event is free and open to the public. To attend, please RSVP to email@example.com with BLONDE ART BOOKS in the subject line.
