Curator’s Perspective: Emiliano Valdés

Curator’s Perspective: Emiliano Valdés Wednesday, April 12, 2017 7–8:30pm Americas Society 680 Park Avenue (at East 68th Street) New York, NY 10065 FREE and open to the public As part of ICI’s Curator’s Perspective—an itinerant public discussion series featuring national and international curators—Emiliano Valdés, Chief Curator of the Medellín Museum of Modern Art (MAMM), will present a talk titled A New Program for a Renewed Institution. With the completion of its new building and amid a growing and professionalizing arts scene, the Medellín Museum of Modern Art (MAMM) expanded not only its physical capacity, but more importantly, its institutional project, vision and scope. New exhibition spaces and for the first time, galleries dedicated to the permanent collection, as well as a theater, a sound gallery, and more public and commercial areas, amongst other facilities, have prompted MAMM to rethink its role in the country’s modern and contemporary art research, exhibition and publication platforms. The opening of the Expansión building in 2015 was not the end of a Museum-expansion program but the point of departure for a rethinking of the Museum’s role in the development of changing city’s arts and culture and its articulation with a wide network of institutions: from independent arts spaces to long-established museums. For this Curator’s Perspective, Emilano Valdés will address the goals for the renewed institution and its various programs, as well as a wider vision of how museums play a role in the transformation of societies, particularly in the context of Latin America and its complex social, political and financial circumstances. This event is free and open to the public. To attend, please RSVP to rsvp@curatorsintl.org with EMILIANO in the subject line. Hosted by the Americas Society.

The Curator’s Perspective is a free, itinerant public discussion series featuring U.S. and international curators, and developed as a way for audiences in New York to connect with timely information about a wide variety of international perspectives on contemporary art today. The series sheds light on movements and models that are still in formation or have been overlooked. This year, speakers in the series will include curators based in Medellín, Münster, and New Orleans, addressing questions about art, culture, and the exhibitions in which they are most interested, as well as the artists and the socio-political contexts that are shaping curatorial practice now. The Curator’s Perspective series has been made possible, in part, by grants from the Hartfield Foundation and by generous contributions from the ICI Board of Trustees and ICI Access Fund. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with City Council.
