ICI in Chicago
Thursday, September 18–Saturday, September 20
In conjunction with EXPO CHICAGO September 18–21 Navy Pier 600 E Grand Avenue Chicago, IL 60611
Independent Curators International (ICI) celebrates EXPO CHICAGO and the IN/SITU section of large-scale and site-specific installations selected by ICI’s Renaud Proch, by heading to Chicago from September 18–20 for an exclusive International Forum program of museum and gallery visits as well as encounters with ICI collaborators, curators, and artists such as Robert Burnier, Glenn Kaino and Cheryl Pope. Join ICI on this extended weekend and let ICI’s network guide you through the art fair and Chicago’s arts and culture scene. Take an exclusive tour of this year’s IN/SITU section, and meet some of the artists selected for the project: Elijah Burgher, Robert Burnier, Ken Gonzales-Day, Fernando Pareja & Leidy Chavez, Cheryl Pope, Michael Rakowitz, Jessica Stockholder, and Saya Woolfalk. IN/SITU provides opportunities for artists to create large-scale and/or site-specific works that stretch beyond conventional fair parameters. The nine artists were selected from proposals made by exhibiting galleries at the fair, and the selection reflects the complexities of the city of Chicago. As an American city, Chicago is proud, rich, sprawling, political, extreme, contradictory, beautiful, segregated. This has created a cultural context that has fed the imagination, and the political and aesthetic explorations of generations of artists. This year’s IN/SITU is a modest attempt at capturing the breadth of creativity that the city generates, and most of the artists have lived, worked, studied, or taught there. Further connecting the fair at Navy Pier to the rest of the city, IN/SITU will for the first time include off-site projects as part of IN/SITU Outside. ICI’s special International Forum program of events begins with a visit to the fair and a curator-led tour of IN/SITU on Thursday, September 18 during the VIP preview, followed by a cocktail reception to debrief on the day; it continues on Friday with a full program of museum, gallery and collection visits, meetings with artists, and a welcome dinner; Saturday will begin with an artists’ breakfast, followed by visits to galleries, and a private collection. For more information on the International Forum, and ICI’s Patrons events, please contact Jenn Hyland, Executive Coordinator, at jenn@curatorsintl.org.
