In Rehearsal with Autumn Knight and Amy L. Powell

In Rehearsal with Autumn Knight and Amy L. Powell Thursday, May 23, 2019 6:30-8pm ICI 401 Broadway, Suite 1620 New York, NY 10013 FREE and open to the public On May 23 join ICI for a workshop with Autumn Knight and Amy L. Powell in celebration of their recent publication Autumn Knight: In Rehearsal. As artists are increasingly reflecting on modes of institutional knowledge production to make their work, the role of the curator is shifting. We’ll be thinking through how these changes are shaping artist-curator dynamics, engagement and relationship to institutions, and community; as well as possibilities for curators and artists to work together to create contexts for performance in museums without dedicated performance departments. This program presented in collaboration with Denniston Hill, where Autumn Knight was in residence in 2017, continues ICI’s engagement with organizations and individual partners in the New York region to think together about our shared investments. Situated in the Southern Catskills on a 200-acre campus, DH was established on the conviction that it is imperative for artists of all disciplines, backgrounds and career stages to have time and space for reflection and research. The organization was founded in 2004 by a group of primarily LGBTQ artists, architects, and writers of color. DH is an artist-centered interdisciplinary residency and arts organization that fosters an inclusive, practical discourse about the aesthetics, function, ethics and meaning of contemporary artistic practice. Their mission is guided by the principle that creative and critical voices are important in shaping a just, equitable society. To attend, please RSVP to rsvp@curatorsintl.org with IN REHEARSAL in the subject line. Autumn Knight: In Rehearsal Drawing from her training in theatre and the psychology of group dynamics, New York–based artist Autumn Knight makes performances that reshape perceptions of race, gender, and authority. She scrutinizes institutional spaces that regulate African American subjects or that assert their absence, often putting black women at the center of the conversation to usurp the dynamics of a room with humor and with purpose. Thanks to our friends Studio Museum you’ve got another chance to celebrate Autumn Knight’s new book, Autumn Knight: In Rehearsal! Visit them uptown on 5/30 to celebrate their 2016-17 artist in residence. Reception to follow at their Radical Reading Room on 127th. More info here.
