Emily Kuhlmann

Emily A. Kuhlmann is a curator, writer, and arts administrator based in San Francisco. As the Director of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs at the Museum of the African Diaspora, she has curated the solo exhibitions of Alison Saar, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Todd Gray and Sadie Barnette. She has managed MoAD’s curatorial program for the last five years, organizing the presentation of national, global and hyperlocal exhibitions including Coffee, Rhum, Sugar & Gold: A Postcolonial Paradox (2019), After the Thrill is Gone: Fashion, Politics and Culture in Contemporary South African Art (2018), and Portraits and Other Likenesses from SFMOMA (2015), among others. Kuhlmann’s writings appear in exhibition catalogs including Black Refractions: Highlights from the Studio Museum in Harlem, Ficre Ghebreyesus: City with a River Running Through It, A Matter of Fact: Toyin Ojih Odutola, and Muzae Sesay: Skeletons. Emily received her BA from the University of California, Irvine in Art History with a minor in Women’s Studies. Returning back to the Bay Area, she received her Master of Arts in Visual and Critical Studies from California College of the Arts.
